Sales is a Sport: 3 Key Features for Coaching Leadership

Hi there, Jon from Sacore here! Let’s talk a bit about sales. But we’re not going to talk numbers, not strategies, not even products. We’re going to talk about you, the leader, and how you can elevate your team to new heights. Here are three key moves for coaching leadership:

Transform Question Marks into Checkpoints

As a coaching leader, you want to lead your team through questions, not answers. Think of it as giving them a map, not a GPS. You’re giving them the chance to navigate, but you’re still steering the course.

Ask things like “What do you think went right in the sales call?” or “What could have been better?” You get them thinking, reflecting, taking ownership. This isn’t a monologue, it’s a dialogue. And it’s in the dialogue that magic happens.

Listen as if Your Next Paycheck Depends on It

Active listening isn’t being a fly on the wall, it’s being a sponge in the room. You soak up everything they say, process it, and reflect it back.

When your team talks, don’t take over. Listen. Understand. Mirror. Use phrases like “So what I’m hearing is …” or “It seems like you feel …”. It shows that you’re truly absorbing what they’re saying and respect their perspective.

Feedback: One Size Does Not Fit All

Feedback is like a tailored suit. It should be customized, not just in what you say, but how you say it. Each member of your team is unique, and how they receive feedback is just as unique.

Understand their style and tailor your message. Some may need it straight to the point, others might need a softer touch. Remember, we’re all on the same side. We all want to improve. Feedback is a bridge, not a barrier.

And let’s not forget – everyone likes to feel they’re doing a good job. So while you point out what they can improve, don’t forget to highlight what they’re already doing well.

So there you have it, my three key moves for coaching leadership. Remember, sales is a sport, and every great sport has a great coach behind it. Now it’s your turn to take the game into your own hands. Good luck!
